I Prayed For An Afterlife Interview

1. Can i get a backstory on the band/ band biography?

Well, The original name for the band was Ascending The Divine (which is now a name of one of our songs on our Ep) which Started with Robert Volkoff & a vision. We sought out for more members & had tryouts with the name being changed to be I Prayed For An Afterlife, April 17th 2011. We continued to record a demo & played 4 shows in July & August but with many line-up changes, the band took a short break to regroup. The band returned to playing shows in October & November but with more difficulty with keeping jobs, practice, personal & consistent member changes, the band took a hiatus which left Robert Volkoff to continue alone in December 2011. In February 2012, Robert started looking for musicians with a more distinct vision with passion, meaning & a different style of music! The first to join was Josiah Sargent on guitar which begun the writing process & beginning of the band! Both of us started to look for more members with much difficulty but we found Andrew Gardner to play drums. The band Decided since we could not find more members, that we would record an Ep/Demo to find people & continue & see what would happen! From a mutual friend & fellow Local Band, we found someone to Record what would become our Debut Ep! A week before we went into the studio we found Mike Taylor on Clean Vocals & Bass! So we went into the studio October 13th, 2012. We stayed  in the studio until the end of January. Right Before We Released the Ep, we found our last but vital addition to the band, Tyler Mazza! We released a lyric video March 2nd & our Debut Ep, March 5th! So now the Official line-up of I Prayed For An Afterlife is Josiah Sargent (Guitar), Andrew Gardner (Drums), Mike Taylor (Clean vocals & Bass), Tyler Mazza (Guitar) & Robert Volkoff (Screams).

2. What lyrical theme do you guys use in your music? What message do you want to send?

We are a Positive influence band & mainly our message is that you're not alone in this world & the answers are within ourselves. We are a faith-based band so Our Lyrical Theme & Message is influenced from our experiences & what weighs heavy on our hearts to express through our music, along with our faith! We feel that music is "Pure Human Emotion" so we try to be as honest, real, deep & truthful with the listener & ourselves!

3. How have the gigs you guys been doing been?

We have yet to play a show but very soon we will be on stage & we look forward to sharing the stage with many bands, spreading our message, performing with all our energy, passion & connecting to everyone & anyone who see us! We all desire to impact our music scene, the people & give back so much hope, positive energy & have a blast every show!  Making every show memorable, exciting and inspiring from interacting & giving back energy, getting everyone involved into our music and have as much fun with the audience is our Goal we plan to reach & exceed!

4. What equipment do you guys use?

Andrew uses a Ludwig Element series kit with various cymbals! Josiah uses a Peavey 6505+ with a Peavey Valve King cab, different pedals & a Ibanez S series guitar with custom pickups! Tyler uses an Axe-Fx 2 with an Ernie Ball Music Man Guitar! Mike uses a Behringer Head with a Custom 4 x 10 Cab &  a custom P-Bass!

5. What bands have influenced your band and its sound?

We have many different Backgrounds of music. Some bands we are influenced are Veil of Maya, The Contortionist, I, The Breather, After The Burial, Periphery, Emery, SilverStein, NorthLane, Saosin, Senses Fail, Within The Ruins, etc! There is too many! Our Sound is a diverse blend and mix of Catchy Choruses, Progressive Riffs & Song Structure, Heavy Deathcore-ish Breakdowns & Ambient & Melodic leads, layers & writing! Those 4 elements of our music what we love & hope will
solidify our own unique sound & style!

6. Do you remember your first show and what was it like?

As the New Line-up we have not had one, but for Robert, he played with some big locals that were on tour! It was at a Church & the headlining bands were AMAZING, but there was so much pressure! I am sure that our first show with be AMAZING & so much fun. Our First show would not be one to miss! I urge anyone to check us out & come to a show where we play - we will not disappoint!

7.What made you guys decide to form a band?

Being in a band has been a passion for all of us ever since we started playing music! Even more so a band with a purpose & message behind it! This band with what we have done & what we are going to do is nothing short of mind-blowing & shocking to us! We feel passionate & called to be IPFAA for the desire to impact peoples lives, give back an amazing live show & most of all, connecting with people & show we really care for what we do & for every person!

8.What is your opinion on sites posting your guys material and other bands material?

We are super honored & excited to have our music be posted on many promotional pages, friends, new followers, fellow bands, online radio, etc! It is surreal! We never imagined this would happen, we are just really happy that people really care for us & we feel the same way towards everyone! We exist to make an impact on people's lives, not for our own gain or glory!

9.Is there any bands that you guys enjoyed playing with more then the others?

My Enemies & I (their Guitarist Recorded, mixed & mastered our Ep) is one band we are super stoked to share the stage with! We support the band, we love their music & are big fans just as much as anyone can be! Carthage, Endeavor, Eyes of Eli, Illuminations, Beyond the Victory, Honour Crest, Blood of the Martyrs, Immoralist; these bands we are anxious to play with as well!

10. How do you guys feel about the classifications in metal? like deathcore, metalcore and other subgenres and how some get a negative rep.

It is really unnecessary honestly. IPFAA has an inside joke of calling ourselves a "Heavy Feels" Band! Its something we hope will catch on, just kidding haha! Most people who are or are not musicians look for some example or comparison of a band & that is why most refer to "genres." Its just music, if its good, its good! If a person likes it then it should not matter what style or genre it is! People put to much weight on classifying a band & it does turn people away from some bands or artists! People miss some of the best music based on styles, genres, etc!

11. What song do you enjoy playing the most?

Its hard to say, Right now Robert really likes One Within, its really challenging & nuts, so much fun! Storms Passing or Ascending the Divine for the rest of the band! Its diverse for us!

12. When not doing things with the band, what can you guys be seen doing?

We spend a lot of time watching adult swim, comedies, movies, eating, going to shows or Dungeons & Dragons! We spend a lot of time on our computers talking to friends or other things also! Tyler & Josiah both go to College so they may work on something their work! Jamming for fun, working on new ideas is also a big pass time!

13.Your biggest band moment?

The biggest moment we had as a band was Releasing this Ep, then possibly releasing our lyric video, probably also finishing the recording process completely. Having Tyler join us was so special which meant for us we are ready to play shows & are complete! The first time in 15 months!

14. What is your opinion on the current state of metal?

There is a change coming but for a while, metal has been lacking when it comes to quality shows, personal band drama, breaking up or calling it quits & new bands on the rise! Luckily their are some main stays that still rule! But so far, in our opinion, the local scene is coming back with SO MUCH TALENT! Its really exciting & sometimes you can see a local band sound and play or be better than the touring bands & work harder! There is hope but it will take a while, that's where we come in because it is our hope to make a splash & impact along with many others in the local scene! Go check out a show with locals - sometimes that is the best music you will find!

15. How did you guys come up with your band name?

Funny story, we didn't feel comfortable with the last name for many reasons so we started looking around and saw our old vocalist with a tattoo that had zombie prayer hands with the name under it! We thought it was different & catchy, so we kept it! Haha

16. What can the fans expect to see from you in the future?

There is so much in store for us! We are now practicing & preparing for shows! Possible merch & maybe a tour this year is in the works! Right now, we are pushing this Ep as much & giving it out online so people can have something to expect from us! The more we work, the more we practice & the more we connect with people - the better we get! We are ready to do whatever it takes to give back our music, passion & energy. Connecting with people & having fun is what we are all about! A bright future is ahead for us!
